Times (covid fear)7
This
past week I encountered a teaching I had never encountered
previously. This teaching was specifically put forth to counter the
pre-tribulation rapture. The gist was that the prayers of the Saints
were responsible for the opening of the Seals of the Scroll (i.e. the
start of the tribulation) based upon the bowls of incense in vs 8
which are the prayers of the Saints. In other words (and this is what
the teacher was saying) is that it was the 'church' was responsible
for opening the seals.
The
main question is, is this a valid interpretation?
Is
this what scripture says? Let's look.
- And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb . Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

- And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
So we see the 24 elders fall before 'the Lamb' (Jesus)
and they had
something
in their hands, harps and bowels of incense (being identified as the
'prayers of the saints').
The
teaching in question states it is the prayers of the saints, (saints
then being interchanged with 'church' (although the text does not say
that)) that releases the seals. By that reasoning one could have said
it was the harps which had the same effect, why not as the harps were
also in the hands of the elders.
To
read on in vs9 is where this teaching is shown to be wanting as the
text clearly states the Lamb is the one who opens the seals, also ch6
vs 1.
"You
are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were
slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe
and language and people and nation. “
“I
watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. “
As
we read it is not the prayers of the church which is given the task
of opening the scroll/seals but Jesus.
Does
Jesus need the 'church' to open the scroll? No.
So
what does this have to do with the rapture?
Well
when one makes the start of the tribulation dependant upon the
'church' and not Jesus then their interpretation of other teaching
must be open to further scrutiny especially when they attack the
pre-trib viewpoint.
