Shurat HaDin Files Maritime
Pollution Complaint Against Greta Thunberg
(Jerusalem) The Shurat
HaDin Law Center has submitted a formal
complaint against Greta Thunberg and other members of the
pro-Hamas flotilla under the 1978 International Convention for
the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (“MARPOL”). The treaty
strictly prohibits the discharge of waste into the sea, including
electronic devices such as mobile phones, which contain plastics,
metals, batteries, and toxic chemicals.
The
complaint was filed with law enforcement authorities in Sweden,
Britain, and Israel, as well as with international maritime bodies.
It is based on photographic evidence from the June 9 flotilla to
Gaza, which shows participants including Thunberg deliberately
throwing their mobile phones into the sea during the Israeli Navy’s
interception of the vessel. According to Shurat HaDin, this was done
to prevent the devices from falling into Israeli hands. The flotilla
ship, the Marianne, sailed under a British flag before being
intercepted.
Shurat HaDin warns that,
given Thunberg’s recent declaration of organizing a new flotilla to
Gaza on August 31, 2025, there is a substantial risk that such
violations will be repeated. The organization has called on the
United Kingdom, as the flag state, to investigate the actions of the
vessel’s occupants for potential MARPOL violations, and urged
Swedish authorities to examine the liability of their nationals. The
International Maritime Organization (IMO) should also be notified.
Shurat HaDin stressed that it is “particularly ironic and
troubling” that individuals presenting themselves as climate
activists are responsible for a clear act of marine pollution,
undermining both environmental protection and activist
credibility.
A Shurat HaDin
spokesperson stated:
“The discharge of mobile phones into
the sea is a direct breach of MARPOL and cannot be ignored. It is
shocking that activists who claim to defend the planet would
deliberately pollute it with toxic waste. Greta Thunberg has built
her reputation on environmental concern, yet her actions betray a
deep hypocrisy. Authorities must hold her and her companions
accountable, both to protect the marine environment and to uphold the
integrity of international law.”
